The Saga of Sam
October 20, 1994
The cast is removed at 8:30 A.M., the T-Tube removed at 11:00 A.M. Then, we participate in the Friday lunch case studies for the Hopkins staff. You are self-assured and entertaining as you discuss your ordeal with physicians and staff. We are supposed to spend the night for observation, but by 3:00 I'm laying in your bed while you wander the halls. Dr. Colombani sends us home because you've done so well. We should have known.
This has truly been an incredible journey. I know that you are touched by the hand of God and can do whatever you set your mind to. This ordeal has brought us closer together and closer to God. I truly believe that much like Mom and I, you and I can read each others thoughts. I'm not certain where we are headed. Since we did not need the living related transplant, I'm still carrying your liver. I guess we'll just return to life as we knew it. Of course, it will never be the same for we have been part of a miracle. The memory of that miracle will allow us to focus charitably on the Hopkins Children Center and Make-A-Wish Foundation. This miracle will make me strive to be as competent, knowledgeable, dedicated and respected at Westinghouse as Dr. Schwarz is at Hopkins. We'll pray that God guides the actions and decisions of Drs. Colombani and Schwarz with their patients as he has with you. You maintain that you have never felt better in your life. I'm looking forward to our conversations at Christmas. And I'll continue to pray for your complete recovery for the rest of my life.
Love,
Dad
