Welcome to the Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program

Johns Hopkins has been performing pediatric kidney transplants since 1977. However, the pediatric program was officially created in 1983 when Dr. Paul Colombani, pediatric transplant surgeon, joined Dr. Barbara Fivush, pediatric nephrologist at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Since that time, over 100 pediatric kidney transplants for U.S. and international patients have been performed here. An average of 10 to 12 kidney transplants are performed each year.   Both the Pediatric Nephrology Division and the Pediatric Surgical Division work closely together to provide comprehensive care before and after transplantation.

The Division of Pediatric Nephrology participates in NAPRTCS (North American Pediatric Renal Trials Collaborative Studies) a research effort designed to monitor and improve the care delivered to children with chronic kidney disease.  Advocacy programs developed by the Pediatric Nephrology Division include Camp All-Stars, a weekend event that is both educational and adventurous.  Camp All-Stars is held each fall and is open to children who have received kidney transplants as well as patients with chronic kidney disease and those on dialysis. The division also holds a bi-yearly transplant reunion to honor kidney recipients and donors.
