Research
Our division prides itself on our strong emphasis on research that supports
and enhances the clinical care of our patients.
Currently, we are working in earnest to uncover the causes of chronic
rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis, as well as mechanisms underlying the
loss of the sense of smell. We also are dedicated to improving patient
care through outcomes research into the medical and surgical management
of rhinosinusitis.
The Rhinology and Sinus Surgery Center has a collaborative partnership
with the Johns Hopkins Allergy and Asthma Center and the Bloomberg School
of Public Health to further our common research goals in understanding
and treating sinus and nasal disorders.
Active areas of research include:
• Causes of chronic rhinosinusitis
• Effects of chronic rhinosinusitis on olfactory function
• Effects of environmental pollutants and tobacco smoke on upper airways
disease
• Novel imaging techniques for evaluating paranasal sinus disease
• Olfactory neuronal regeneration and olfactory sensory loss
