Jahn O'Neil, Ph.D.

Jahn N. O’Neil was born in Christiansted, St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands.  She received her bachelor’s of science degree at the University of the Virgin Islands in biology.  She subsequently went on to earn a degree in physiology and biophysics, specializing in neurophysiology at Howard University in 2006 under the tutelage of her advisor Dr. Kebreten Manaye.  Jahn’s thesis was entitled Alzheimer’s disease and depression: a stereological, behavioral and neurochemical assessment of a double transgenic APP/PS1 mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease.  Her interests are wide and varied which led to her new focus on research in the central auditory system.

Jahn is currently a post-doctoral fellow in the Ryugo lab where she is exploring synaptic development and plasticity with respect to hereditary deafness and hearing restoration using cochlear implants.  In her free time, Jahn enjoys an eclectic range of music and reading.  She also enjoys movies and some outdoor activities.
