The University HealthSystem Consortium

The University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC), formed in 1984, is an alliance of academic health centers situated mainly in the United States.  The mission of the University HealthSystem Consortium is to advance knowledge, foster collaboration, and promote change to help members succeed in their respective markets.  As a membership organization, UHC provides its 90 full members and 123 associate members with a variety of helpful resources aimed at improving performance levels in clinical, operational, and financial areas.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) joined UHC in April 2003 and has been participating in their clinical and operational benchmarking programs since August 2003.  In conjunction with these programs and their membership in UHC, JHH / JHU submits data to and generates detailed reports from three web-based benchmarking databases and a web-based patient safety event reporting system.  The following is a list of those tools and who can be contacted with questions / concerns related to the use of those tools:

Operational Data Base (ODB)

This tool is also known as ACTION O-I (developed by Solucient).  Generates reports that compare operations for the overall facility and at the department level in terms of productivity and cost efficiency.

Clinical Data Base (CDB)

Generates benchmarking reports that compare clinical outcomes such as LOS, complications, readmissions, and mortality by line of service (APR-DRGs) or procedure.
