ARE THE NEW CANCER CENTER BUILDINGS GOING TO BE RENAMED?

No, they will remain the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Building (for clinical care) and The Bunting Family, The Family of Jacob and Hilda Blaustein Building (for basic research).

Public understanding will be similar to “Sloan Kettering,” “MD Anderson,” and “Dana-Farber.”                                                          

WHO IS SIDNEY KIMMEL?

Mr. Kimmel [emphasis in on the first syllable] is the founder and chairman of Jones Apparel Group Inc.; a partner in Cipriani [pronounced “chipriani” — like chip of wood], which is a restaurant and catering business; and part-owner of the Miami Heat pro basketball team.

He is a major philanthropist in Philadelphia and other cities, and he has been particularly generous to other institutions in supporting cancer research.  He also is a major supporter of the arts, education, and Jewish causes.

His most recent gifts that have been publicized are to Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York and to the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia.                                                          

IS SIDNEY KIMMEL A GRADUATE OF JOHNS HOPKINS?

No.                                                          

WHAT IS HIS CONNECTION AND WHY HAS HE MADE THIS GIFT TO HOPKINS?

Mr. Kimmel has supported cancer research at Johns Hopkins in the past through the Sidney Kimmel Foundation. He considers Johns Hopkins to be one of the leading institutions in the world and has chosen to build on its momentum in the field of cancer research and patient treatment.                                                          

IS THIS THE LARGEST GIFT SIDNEY KIMMEL HAS MADE?

Yes.                                                          

WHAT IS THE NEXT LARGEST GIFT HE HAS MADE?

His largest gifts have been $40 million to the Kimmel Scholars Program and $30 million for the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia.                                                          

IS THIS THE SINGLE LARGEST GIFT TO CANCER?

It is the single largest gift to cancer research at Johns Hopkins, and is believed to be one of the largest gifts dedicated to cancer at the national level.                                                          

IS THIS THE SINGLE LARGEST GIFT TO  HIGHER EDUCATION?

No. The larger gifts that are published include: the Bill and Melinda Gates gift of $1 billion for the Gates Millennium Scholars; and the recent gift of $600 million from Gordon and Anne Moore to Cal Tech.                                                          

IS THIS THE LARGEST GIFT TO JOHNS HOPKINS MEDICINE?

Yes, it is.  Before this, the largest gift received was $58.5 million from an anonymous donor to create the Institute for Cell Engineering.                                                          

HAVE YOU RECEIVED THE FUNDS FROM MR. KIMMEL?

Over a third of the gift has been received (over $50 million).                                                          

WHAT DOES THE “COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER” MEAN?

Johns Hopkins is one of only 41 cancer centers in the country designated by the National Cancer Institute as a comprehensive cancer center.  The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center has active programs in clinical research, laboratory research, education, community outreach, prevention, and control.
