KUDOS FOR HOWARD COUNTRY GENERAL HOSPITAL
The Center for Maternal/Fetal Medicine (CMFM) at Howard County General Hospital recently received accreditation from the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, an association dedicated to promoting the safe and effective use of ultrasound. This three-year accreditation means CMFM meets voluntary standards set by the diagnostic ultrasound profession.
But that’s not all. The Joint Commission, the national agency that accredits hospitals and nursing homes, conducted an unannounced survey at Howard County General Hospital from May 11 to May 13. The hospital was recognized for best practices and the surveyors were impressed with the hospital’s facilities. The surveyors did note a few areas that need improvement and action plans are in the works to address these matters.

Real-time chat capabilities are now available through Johns Hopkins Instant Messaging service (JHIM). Similar to programs offered by Microsoft or Google, JHIM helps reduce the number of conversational-type e-mail messages that overwhelm inboxes, improves collaboration and real-time interaction within work groups, and keeps offsite colleagues connected. And, for faculty and staff members who are currently covered under the Microsoft campus license agreement, there’s no cost.
Communicating in the 21st century means that you get your messages instantly through electronic devices, and a new e-fax service at Hopkins allows users to receive faxes to e-mail addresses and send faxes through a Web-based interface, eliminating the need for fax machines, fax phone lines and maintenance plans—providing an easier way to send and receive faxes while reducing expenses.

INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS GENERAL SURVEY UPDATE
Thanks to the 1,388 faculty and staff members who responded to the recent Johns Hopkins Medicine internal communications survey. Participants weighed in on what their preferred publications are for gathering news about Hopkins, how well informed they are about the institution’s initiatives and how they like to receive information. Responses are being used to identify strengths and provide recommendations for improved communications. More details about the survey results will be available this fall.
