The 29th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration guest speakers
The 29th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration features two prominent champions of justice for all: Shirley Sherrod, a former United States Department of Agriculture official who was forced to resign from her job last year after she was falsely accused of being a racist, and Vice Admiral Regina Benjamin, U.S. Surgeon General. An Alabama native, Benjamin was the first physician under age 40 and the first African-American woman to be elected to the American Medical Association Board of Trustees. Both have been champions of civil rights and equality for all races.
This year’s theme is “Strength to Love: A Legacy for the Kings, a Future for America.” The event takes place on Jan. 7 at noon in Turner Auditorium.
Following tradition, the program will feature the Unified Voices choir and recognize faculty and staff of The Johns Hopkins University and The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System who have earned the MLK Community Service Award.
