The Johns Hopkins Health System was recently recognized by the Maryland Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a group serving under the assistant secretary of defense for reserve affairs, for its support of our country’s warriors.

Retired Gen. Art Pulket nominated the health system for the Above and Beyond Award, which was created to publicly recognize American employers who provide extraordinary support and cooperation to their employees who have answered their nation’s call to serve. In his nomination, Pulket cited the recent formation of Veterans for Hopkins. This resource group, established for Johns Hopkins employees who are veterans or family members of veterans, promotes the mission, vision, values and goals of Johns Hopkins Medicine and works to establish mutually beneficial relationships between JHM, its workforce and the communities it serves.

Derrick Colter, a security supervisor at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, also received the Above and Beyond Award for his willingness to accommodate the demanding and sometimes unpredictable schedule of Hopkins Bayview security officer Megan Jones, who is also a member of the Army National Guard. Colter says there are many benefits to working with a National Guard member like Jones. “She has great leadership skills, and she’s very independent,” he says. “She’s someone you can always count on.”
