Media Advisory: Open House for New Inpatient Rehab Unit: Brand-New Facility Offers State-Of-The-Art Rehabilitation

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins Medicine is expanding to continue improving the quality of patient care. New facilities are needed not only to address a growing demand for health care but also to advance the standard of compassionate, individualized care at Johns Hopkins Medicine.

What:
A grand opening with speeches from Johns Hopkins leadership and open house of a new physical medicine and rehabilitation facility at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, the new state-of-the-art 18-bed inpatient unit is designed to help patients practice and return to everyday activities. The facility includes:

  • All-private rooms with private bathrooms and sofas that convert into beds so that family members may stay overnight.
  •  A mock apartment with a bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette where patients can practice the tasks of living independently.
  • An area called streetscape where patients can rehearse daily activities such as visiting stores and using an ATM.
  • Airline seats and a car for patients to practice maneuvering in small spaces, which is especially helpful to patients who have traveled a long way for care.
  • A courtyard with several outdoor surfaces where patients can practice walking.
  • Animal-assisted therapy as a comforting treatment option for patients who enjoy animals.

Who:
Johns Hopkins leadership including:

  • Johns Hopkins Health System President Ronald R. Peterson, who will be speaking on the growth and legacy of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation since he’s been at Johns Hopkins.
  • Johns Hopkins Medicine CEO and Dean of the Johns Hopkins University Medical School Paul Rothman, M.D., who will speak on how important inpatient rehabilitation is for the care of patients as they heal after surgery and other treatments here at Johns Hopkins. Dean/CEO Rothman will also address how population health initiatives like this new inpatient rehab unit are relevant in the modern health care market.
  • Redonda Miller, M.D., M.B.A., president of The Johns Hopkins Hospital, will be cutting the ribbon to officially open the new space.
  • Pablo Celnik, M.D., director of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, will highlight the new space’s state-of-the-art amenities, as well as discuss what lies ahead for the department.
