Gene E. Green, M.D.

Gene E. Green, M.D., has been appointed president of Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM). He will succeed Brian Gragnolati, who will now transition full time into his role of senior vice president for the Johns Hopkins Health System, where he oversees the Community Division, which includes Suburban, Sibley Memorial and Howard County General hospitals.

Dr. Green currently serves as vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer for Johns Hopkins Community Physicians (JHCP), a 400-provider, multi-specialty group practice located with 37 sites throughout Maryland and the Washington, D.C., area.

“Dr. Green is a proven leader with a strong background in quality and safety improvement and clinical program development,” notes Christopher J. Doherty, chairman of the board of trustees for Suburban Hospital.  “As someone who has spent his entire career working in community-based medicine, Gene is very familiar with the challenges of that environment.”

Dr. Green joined JHCP in 2003 and has held a number of clinical and leadership positions within that organization. His efforts within JHCP led to significant improvements in operating performance and increased patient, employee and physician satisfaction.

“Suburban Hospital will benefit from Gene’s experience as an effective relationship builder and communicator,” says Gragnolati. “His knowledge of Johns Hopkins Medicine will be extremely effective in facilitating and accelerating our clinical integration efforts with other parts of the Hopkins system.”

Before entering medical school, Green worked as a paramedic and a small business owner in the Tidewater area of Virginia. He earned his medical degree at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he also completed a residency in family medicine and internal medicine. He holds a master of business administration degree from The Johns Hopkins University.
