Details: Experts from Johns Hopkins Medicine and other selected participants will host a press conference following a continuing medical education program on the epidemiology of head injury in professional football. This program will be an evidence-based review of traumatic brain injury in the sport. The evidence basis for the topics covered includes methods of measuring effects of injury on the brain, long-term clinical effects, and recovery time before return to football. Recommendations for future research to augment current knowledge regarding this topic will also be identified. Head injuries are a risk in many sports and recreational activities, including football, and there are rising numbers of such injuries among members of the military. While much is known about the frequency of such injuries, clinical and long-term brain effects are less understood. Several controversies have arisen around these issues, including management of return to play, long-term effects and diagnostic technologies. This event will be as informative as it is timely.
