May 29, 2009- An evening of opera music featuring Metropolitan opera star Denyce Graves was held recently to raise funds to benefit organ transplant surgery research and care at Johns Hopkins. The event, titled “Let the Music Move You,” was attended by 70 guests at Graves’ home in Bethesda, Md.

The fiancée of Johns Hopkins’ Chief Transplant Surgeon Robert Montgomery, M.D., Ph.D., Graves sang pieces by Richard Strauss, Saint-Saens, Carrie Jacobs, and Georges Bizet at the event.

At Hopkins, Montgomery is best known for championing innovative approaches to increasing the supply of living donor organs, including altruistic donation, incompatible kidney transplantation and “domino donor” transplants involving as many as six unrelated pairs of transplant donors and recipients at one time.

The event, which raised more than $70,000, was chaired by Margery and Thomas Pozefsky. Thomas Pozefsky, M.D., assistant professor of medicine, is a physician at Johns Hopkins and is part of the Park Medical Associates group at Green Spring Station.   They have endowded the Margery K. and Thomas Pozefsky Professorship in Kidney Transplantation and made significant contributions to the Hopkins transplant program.

See a Johns Hopkins Web documentary, featured at the fundraiser, about the six-way kidney swap at http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/kidneytransplant/index.html.
