Trigeminal Diagnosis

Most neurologists or primary care practitioners will want to determine if there is anything else causing your pain besides trigeminal neuralgia. To make that determination, it is customary to get an MRI with a contrast agent to make sure there is no tumor or vascular abnormality pressing on the nerve. This test will also frequently pick up the characteristic appearance of multiple sclerosis. Don’t be afraid of this test. It will help to clarify your diagnosis (most are completely normal), and will also help to determine the best course of treatment. Some physicians will also want to get some laboratory tests to be sure you do not have any other diseases which might produce pain. It is mandatory for any neurosurgeon who is considering a procedure for you to review such a scan, so please have one available before you go for a consultation.
