Our research in HIV/NeuroAIDS has focused on developing in-vitro models for studies of neuroglia function. We have developed a human brain organotypic culture system that allow us to study models of HIV infection and the role of neuroglia and blood vessel interaction during such infection.

Most recently, we have focused on the development of a similar in-vitro infection model for studies of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy by using JC viruses to infect neuroglial cells. This model will be very useful for studies of the biology of a rare and usually fatal viral disease known as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). It will also be useful in identifying potential treatment approaches. Collaborators include Drs. Carlos Pardo and Justin McArthur.
