Who We Are

The Peripheral Nerve Center at Johns Hopkins has assembled a group of specialists that provide expertise in most nerve disorders, including diagnosis and both medical and surgical treatments. The Center was founded to provide the highest quality care for peripheral nerve diseases, including surgical options, and to generate new understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of nerve diseases through research.

For more than twenty years, patients from all around the world have come to Johns Hopkins for care of their peripheral nerve problems. The peripheral nerve center strives to provide the best possible care to the patient and their families. This includes a holistic approach addressing the total well being of the patient. We are committed to offering state-of-the-art neurological and neurosurgical care and work closely with colleagues from other disciplines to provide team-oriented, multi-disciplinary care.

The clinicians of the Peripheral Nerve Center have access to outstanding diagnostic laboratories. The Electrophysiology lab is one of the foremost clinical and research groups in the world for electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies (NCV's), and specialized techniques such as single fiber recordings. The Nerve and Muscle Biopsy service performs more than 200 biopsies yearly and receives biopsies from other hospitals for processing, interpretation and review. The Cutaneous Neurology lab is one of labs that developed the technique of skin biopsies immunostained to see the small nerve fibers within the skin. This technique has provided a new method that is especially useful in assessing the small sensory pain fibers that are "invisible" in nerve conduction studies.
