Dr. Papangelou received his bachelor of science in chemistry with a minor in classical studies from the University of Florida in 1997.  He went to medical school at the University of Miami, where he decided to pursue a career in neurology.  He completed his preliminary year in internal medicine and his neurology residency at the University of Maryland.  He continued his clinical training with a residency in anesthesiology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.  Bringing his passions together, he finished with fellowship training in neurocritical care and neuroanesthesia at Johns Hopkins.

Dr. Papangelou currently serves as an assistant professor of anesthesiology with secondary appointments in neurological surgery and neurology.  His research interests include brain edema, osmolartherapy, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and subarachnoid hemorrhage.  Mentored by Dr. Mirski, his clinical research currently centers on defining the physiology of administering 23.4% saline for intracranial hypertension and herniation syndromes.  He has also started work on assessing rates of ventilator-associated pneumonia in the neurocritical care unit, and whether certain interventions improve these rates.

His laboratory research involves brain edema and hypertonic saline as well.  He has assisted Dr. T Tung, Professor of Anesthesia, in several projects in rats.  One study assessed the change in brain edema if hypertonic saline is administered during the acute stroke period.  Another active study is comparing diuretic effects of furosemide and 30% saline in rats of different volume states.

Dr. Papangelou also has a passion to teach.  With the help of Dr. Carhuapoma, he has developed a curriculum to teach neurocritical fellows airway management, management of the herniating patient, and procedural skills at the Simulation Center at Johns Hopkins.

Dr. Papangelou has published book chapters on perioperative stroke and venous air embolus during craniotomy.  He has also written or contributed to papers on the treatment of brain edema and the preoperative assessment of the surgical patient with neurological disease.
