MS Clinical Trial: Study of PEGylated Interferon Beta-1A

Application No: NA_00024522
Principal Investigator: Peter Calabresi
For more information please contact Kristy Albright at 410-502-6867

This research is being done to study the safety and effectiveness of the investigational drug called PEGylated Interferon beta-1a (BIIB017) in the treatment of MS. PEGylated Interferon beta-1a is similar to Avonex, except that it has been changed by a process called “PEGylation”, so that it may last longer in the body. This may allow injections of PEGylated Interferon to be given less often than other interferons that are not PEGylated and can help decrease the intensity and frequency of some of the interferon side effects (e.g., flu-like symptoms).

The goal of this study is to determine whether PEGylated interferon will lessen the number of MS relapses that occur over a period of time and slow down the worsening of MS symptoms.

Participants enrolled in this study must be diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS and between the ages of 18 and 55 years.
