Dr. Richard O’Brien received both his medical degree and Ph.D. from Harvard Medical School. He then completed an internship at Massachusetts General Hospital. He then came to Johns Hopkins where he completed a residency in neurology and a fellowship in neuromuscular disease.

Now an Associate Professor of Neurology at Johns Hopkins, Dr. O’Brien is the Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

Dr. O'Brien's has several research programs. His laboratory investigates the molecular mechanisms that regulate the development and maintenance of excitatory synapses in the central nervous system. In addition, Dr OBrien is an authority on the production of cerebrospinal fluid and the amyloid Aβ peptide, both key steps in the development of memory and gait disorders.  Dr. O'Brien is also the director of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging Autopsy Program, one of the nation’s premier studies of the cause of memory loss in the elderly.

Dr O'Brien sees patients with memory disorders and with CSF disorders including normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) at The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
