How does trauma to the brain cause seizures?
Patients suffering from a traumatic brain injury are much more likely to experience seizures or epilepsy compared to individuals that do not. The most common causes of traumatic brain injuries include falls, car accidents and sports-related injuries. The risk of a seizure greatly increases with the severity of the trauma.
While many types of seizures may be caused by a traumatic incident, the most common are partial (focal) seizures or tonic-clonic (formerly known as grand mal) seizures.
