Clinical Trials

At the Johns Hopkins Encephalitis Center, we are dedicated to improving therapeutic approaches for acute encephalitis through the development of advanced clinical trials.

These clinical trials will fall into one of three categories:

  1. Advanced Supportive Care
We have developed state-of-the-art capabilities to offer advanced supportive care for patients with acute encephalitis. Often, the neurologic damage caused by acute encephalitis occurs as a result of uncontrollable seizures. Establishing an aggressive monitoring program and instigating aggressive anti-seizure treatments is critical for limiting potential damage. Maintaining adequate respiratory and nutritional support is also an important part of improving patient outcomes.
  2. Neuroprotective Strategies
We are striving to develop neuroprotective strategies that can be applied to encephalitis cases regardless of the underlying cause. Whether a patient is suffering from an infection or immune mediated encephalitis, we hope to develop strategies that can be implemented early in the course that will limit damage.
  3. New Therapeutic Strategies
Through advanced clinical trials at the Johns Hopkins Encephalitis Center, we plan to identify new therapeutic strategies for specific causes of encephalitis.
