Jaishri Blakeley, M.D., adult neurologist and Director of the Johns Hopkins Neurofibromatosis Comprehensive Center in Baltimore, received the prestigious 2009 “Make A Difference Award” at the 30th Anniversary Celebration of Neurofibromatosis, Inc.-Mid-Atlantic on October 8, 2009.

In presenting the Award, Megan Leaf of Baltimore, one of Blakeley’s patients, said “I nominated Dr. Blakeley because she is thorough and patient, exploring every option before jumping to conclusions. When I am with her, I feel like a person and not just another patient. I can count on her listening to my ailments without passing judgment.”
Dr. Blakeley is an Assistant Professor in Neurology, Oncology and Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins University Medical School and focuses her clinical efforts on the diagnosis and management of primary brain tumors in adults. Her research focus is in designing and conducting clinical trials to advance promising therapies for brain tumors.
The “Make A Difference Award” was established in 2002 by Neurofibromatosis, Inc.-Mid-Atlantic as a recognition of a professional in the Mid-Atlantic region who has demonstrated an exceptionally warm and giving heart and who has gone beyond the usual expected treatment. NF, Inc.-Mid-Atlantic wants to encourage good patient/professional relationships that can enhance the quality of life for those affected by neurofibromatosis. An individual with neurofibromatosis or a family member nominates the professional for the Award. Each recipient is awarded an engraved professionally framed print of Norman Rockwell’s multicultural “Do Unto Others.”
Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on the nerves anywhere in the body at any time. The condition affects 1 in 2,500 to 3,000 males and females of all races and ethnic groups. NF can cause blindness, deafness, learning disabilities, bone deformities, and cancer. The symptoms are generally treated with surgery. The unpredictability and potential for disfigurement and medical problems caused by NF often increase the burden of those who have the disorder. At this time, there is no known cure.
Neurofibromatosis, Inc.-Mid-Atlantic was established in 1979 as a nonprofit support organization to provide information on all forms of NF and related disorders. NF, Inc.-Mid-Atlantic provides peer counseling, sponsors Camp New Friends, and stimulates, promotes and funds NF research.
