Dr. Vining received her medical degree from The Johns Hopkins and then completed a residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She returned to Baltimore for a fellowship in developmental pediatrics at The Kennedy Institute.

Now a Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics and Director of the John M. Freeman Pediatric Epilepsy Center, Dr. Vining is a national and international expert in the diagnosis and management of children with epilepsy. She is particularly interested in an approach that treats the whole child by considering the social, educational and behavioral aspects of epilepsy as well as the most modern medical and surgical therapies. This is reflected in the book that she co-authored, Seizures and Epilepsy in Childhood: A Guide.

Her research interests include assessing and improving the outcomes of epilepsy surgery, investigating the ketogenic diet (efficacy, implementation, nutritional and health issues), the etiology and treatment of Rasmussen's syndrome and the effect of seizures and antiepileptic medications on learning.

Dr. Vining currently sees children who have seizures in the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center located in Baltimore on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
