He completed his neurology training at MCP Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, now Drexel University College of Medicine. After his residency training, he completed fellowship training in neurocritical care and acute stroke at Drexel University College of Medicine and became a faculty member in the neurocritical care and acute stroke division. He currently serves as the medical director of the stroke service at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Now an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Urrutia focuses on the clinical aspects of cerebrovascular disease (stroke), specifically acute stroke therapy, and epidemiology/prevention. His goal is to contribute to improving stroke care in Panama as well as in Hispanic and underserved populations in the United States.
