Dr. Mirski studied and received his medical training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he completed his Bachelor of Science degrees in chemistry and biology. He attended Washington University of St. Louis Medical School where he completed the medical scientist training program and earned his MD and PhD degrees in neurosciences. Dr. Mirski thereafter completed a residency in both anesthesiology and neurology, as well as fellowship training in critical care and neuroanesthesiology.

Following several years on faculty at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Mirski left in 1996 to organize and create the first comprehensive Neuroscience Institute in the Pacific Rim at the Queen’s Medical Center, University of Hawaii in Honolulu. There, he developed the first subspecialty neuroscience intensive care unit in the Pacific region, along with an acute stroke center, intraoperative monitoring program for brain and spine surgery, acute head trauma center, and the first epilepsy monitoring facility in Hawaii. Dr. Mirski also developed a collaborative clinical and laboratory research environment at the Institute and recruited the legendary Dr. Bo Siesjo from Lund, Sweden to head the neurophysiology laboratories. Dr. Mirski was then recruited back to Johns Hopkins in 1999 as director of the Neurosciences Critical Care Division and chief of neuroanesthesiology.

Dr. Mirski currently serves as vice-chair for the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. He also serves as director of the Johns Hopkins neuroscience critical care units (NCCU) at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. and remains division chief of Neuroanesthesiology as well as co-director for the Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Stroke Center. He has a triple appointment as associate professor of Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine, Neurology, and Neurosurgery.

His current laboratory research involves the investigation of the subcortical mechanisms of seizure propagation and cortical synchrony. Major efforts are directed toward the development of methodologies for seizure inhibition via site-specific subcortical electrical stimulation. The principal finding of his research - identification of synaptically linked subcortical elements important in seizure propagation - has led to current FDA sanctioned Phase II-III clinical trials of targeted thalamic stimulation in patients with intractable seizures. He also has primary research in the treatment of brain edema, ICU sedation, and acute stroke.

Dr. Mirski is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiology, Society of Critical Care Medicine, Society of Neurosurgical Anesthesia and Critical Care, American Academy of Neurology, and the American Neurological Association. Dr. Mirski served on the Board of Directors of the Society of Neurological Critical Care, and is a member of the editorial board for Contemporary Critical Care, Journal of Neurocritical Care, and Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology. He is an ad hoc reviewer for Critical Care Medicine, Anesthesiology, Epilepsia, American Journal of Neuroradiology, and Annals of Neurology, among others. He is the author of over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, abstracts, and book chapters. His research interests include the investigation of the subcortical mechanisms of seizure propagation and cortical synchrony, proconvulsant action of alpha 2 receptor antagonists, and pharmacologic control of elevated intracranial pressure following acute head injury.
