The Johns Hopkins Clinical Neurophysiology (CN) fellowship is under the auspices of the EEG/Epilepsy Group. Individuals with particular interest in neuromuscular disorders are encouraged to consider the Johns Hopkins Neuromuscular Medicine fellowship, directed by Dr. Ahmet Hoke.
The CN fellow with the EEG group is involved in the interpretation of electroencephalograms (EEG) and the clinical evaluation and management of seizure disorders. Extensive training is provided with respect to inpatient and outpatient EEG and in the review of video/EEG (scalp, subdural, or depth) records of patients admitted to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.
CN fellows in both groups are given the optional opportunity to learn all aspects of clinical neurophysiology. Opportunities are particularly available for training in intraoperative monitoring and sleep disorders.
The CN fellows take part in ongoing clinical research projects. Fellows are encouraged to start and finish independent projects, which, due to the time constraints of the fellowship, often involve retrospective reviews of case series.
CN fellows receive daily instruction under direct supervision. Hands-on experience is provided in the performance and interpretation of various diagnostic tests and in the examination and management of patients, including those admitted to the hospital and those seen in outpatient clinics. In addition, weekly didactic teaching conferences are held by each of the two groups. The CN fellows are encouraged to present and discuss interesting or complicated patients or electrophysiology records.
