Frame Placement

On the morning of the surgery, you will arrive in the radiology suite for placement of the stereotactic head frame. This "halo" type frame allows us to precisely target the brain structure that will benefit from the stimulation. You will be fully awake while the head frame is placed and receive a local anesthetic prior to the head frame being attached. The placement typically takes less than 15 minutes.

Frameless

Available at Johns Hopkins is a new frameless approach that doesn't require a frame to be attached to your head during surgery. This approach uses five small bone screws and a disposable, lightweight guidance device, that eliminates the need for the head and neck be kept completely stationary during surgery. Your surgeon will discuss with you whether frameless surgery is appropriate for your case.
