Sending Biopsy Tissue to Johns Hopkins

Follow the instructions below for performing skin biopsies in your office and sending tissue to the Johns Hopkins Cutaneous Nerve Laboratory for processing and evaluation.

  • Complete the referral form and fax to 410 502 5560. We will obtain necessary insurance authorizations for processing and evaluation of the tissue.
  • Once authorization has been obtained, the following items will be shipped to your office:
    • Buffer and cryoprotectant solutions
    • Printed instructions for obtaining biopsies and for cryoprotecting samples
    • Wound care instructions to give to patient
    • Shipping container and ice pack for return shipment
      (NOTE: Keep ice pack in refrigerator until use)
    • Shipping instructions
    • Pre-printed FedEx airbill for return shipment
    • Biopsy kit - please note that the following supplies are NOT part of the kit, but will be needed to complete the skin biopsy:
      • Injectable local anesthetic
      • Syringe
      • Alcohol wipes
      • Gauze pads
      • Gloves
      • Bandages
      • Tape measure
      • Skin marker
  • Standard biopsy sites are proximal and distal thigh, and distal leg.  If you wish to biopsy non-standard sites, please call 410 614 6399 and one of our clinicians will speak with you.
