A stroke can leave lasting effects and be challenging to overcome, but there are free support groups that can help:
- Inch by Inch at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is a free support group for stroke survivors, their families and caregivers that meets monthly to discuss problems, concerns and achievements facing survivors as they learn to adapt to their condition and cope with changes in their bodies and lifestyles. Please call 410-550-7793 for more information or to join.
- Howard County General Hospital's monthly stroke support group helps educate patients and families on stroke risk factors and provides advice on how to remain living independently at home. For details about the meetings, please contact the HCGH Wellness Center at 410-740-7601.
American Heart Association / American Stroke Association
The American Stroke Association is a division of the American Heart Association that focuses on reducing risk, disability and death from stroke through research, education, fund raising and advocacy, and provides more funding for stroke research and programs than any other organization except the federal government. Their website provides a range of useful information and resources for stroke survivors and their families.
National Stroke Association
The National Stroke Association is the only national entity in the United States that focuses 100% of its efforts on stroke. NSA achieves its mission to lower the incidence and impact of stroke by developing compelling community outreach programs, calling for continued improvement in the quality of stroke patient care and educating both healthcare professionals and the general public about stroke. Their website is a valuable resource for patients and their families, friends and caregivers.
