Research and Professional Interests

Dr. Shafi’s research is focused on developing methods of measuring and estimating kidney function and the relationship between kidney function and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Shafi is applying these methods to: a) study residual kidney function in dialysis patients; and b) develop simplified protocol for kidney function measurement in patients with polycystic kidney disease. Dr. Shafi’s research involves the Choices for Healthy Outcomes in Caring for ESRD [CHOICE] Study and the Predictors of Arrhythmic and Cardiovascular Risk in ESRD (PACE) Study. Dr. Shafi is actively involved in healthcare effectiveness research in dialysis patients as part of the Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions about Effectiveness (DEcIDE) network and is also conducting research using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data. Dr. Shafi is also actively involved in organizing the Clinical and Translational Core of the Johns Hopkins Polycystic Kidney Disease Research and Clinical Core Center.
