Research and Professional Interests

Dr. Shafi’s research is focused on developing methods of measuring and estimating kidney function particularly in patients with kidney failure on dialysis. Dr. Shafi is supported by a NIDDK career development award and is conducting studies to develop methods to measure residual kidney function in dialysis patients and identify ways to prevent loss of residual kidney function. Dr. Shafi’s research also involves the Choices for Healthy Outcomes in Caring for ESRD (CHOICE) Study, comparative effectiveness research in dialysis patients as part of the Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions about Effectiveness (DEcIDE) network and the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis-Kidney Study.
