This is a tumor most commonly found on the eighth cranial nerve, but can be found on other cranial nerves. Most of these tumors are benign, slow growing tumors and are not invasive.
Like other tumors in the brain, the symptoms related to schwannomas depend on the size and location of the tumor. Acoustic neuromas, a type of schwannoma, usually cause hearing loss. Fifth nerve schwannomas can cause facial pain. The diagnosis is made by collecting a careful history and physical examination followed by an MRI with and without contrast.
Surgery is a frequent treatment for these tumors. At Johns Hopkins, we may use radiation therapy or stereotactic radiosurgery, depending on the location of the tumor and size of the tumor.
