Specimen Requirements:

Stool in sterile container from inpatient locations and Carey-Blair preservative from outpatient locations.

CULTURE GUIDELINES

Normal Aerobic Flora

Aerobic Organisms Identified

 Comments

Enterobacteriaceae other than:

  • Salmonella sp.
  • Shigella sp.
  • Yersinia sp.
  • Aeromonas sp.
  • Plesiomonas sp.
  • Vibrio sp.

Pseudomonas sp. and other non-fermentative bacilli 

 Streptococcus sp.

 Yeast

Any amount of the following:

  • Salmonella sp.
  • Shigella sp.
  • Campylobacter sp.
  • Yersinia sp.
  • Aeromonas sp.
  • Plesiomonas sp.
  • Vibrio sp. (Jun-Sept)
  • Detection of SLT-1 and SLT-2 toxins by separate assay (EHEC).  Available upon request.

Stool cultures are not accepted on patients who have been hospitalized for >3 days. 

Physician notified of positive culture
