Microscope Facility Events & Workshops

  • Feb 11-27, 2013 PCTB, room 207
Zeiss Elyra S.1 Super-Resolution Demo It's an easy-to-use super-resolution technique (~120nm resolution xy) that requires minimal sample constraints, while outperforming normal confocal microscopy. It is the ONLY super-resolution technique that can operate with deep specimens (up to ~30um) AND IMPROVES RESOLUTION in ALL THREE DIMENSIONS. Guideline for sample preparation and event overview are available.
  • Nov 7-9, 2011 (CHANGE in date) PCTB, room 207
Leica GSD Super-Resolution Demo Just-released 'Ground-State Depletion' super-resolution instrumentation. Almost protein-sized (~10nm) resolution for individual fluorophores. Great for fixed/permeabilized samples or extracellular markers. Conditions for intracellular still being developed. Documentation for overview and for protocols, as well as some reagents, are available for participants.
  • Nov 7-8, 2011 (CHANGE in location) ~600 Washington St (by McElderry St, bus)
GE High-Content Screening and API Deconvolution Microscope In the GE Healthcare bus, two instruments will be visiting JHU SOM. One is a high-content/high-throughput imaging system to screen multiple microscopic samples by automated image recognition software. The other is an automated deconvolution microscope great for monitoring living cells while minimizing phototoxicity, often better than confocal in quality. It's the next generation offering from Applied Precision.
  • Mon Oct 17, 2011, 2:00-3:00 Bodian Conf Room, 1830 E Monument St, Suite 2-200
Seminar: Super-Resolution by Ground-state Depletion (GSD) Similar resolution as PALM/STORM, but NOT PALM/STORM and NOT STED. Some constraints on specimen preparation, but necessary introduction for the Demo next month (on Nov 7-Nov 9, 2011).
  • June 23, 2011, 1:30-4:30 WBSB West Lecture Hall
Nuance, inForm & Trio Demo James R. Mansfield (Caliper Life Sciences) will present multi-spectral imaging without confocal (great for histology, tissues & quantitation of protein expression)
  • May 25, 2011, 2:00-3:00 Bodian Conf Room, 1830 E Monument St, Suite 2-200
Seminar on using high-pressure freezing and freeze-substitution Kim Rensing (Leica Microsystem) will introduce the Microscope Facility's newest acquisitions: HPM100 (high-pressure freezer) and AFS2 (automated freeze-substitution).  Becoming the gold-standard of specimen preparation, these techniques preserve cellular ultrastructure with great fidelity.
  • May 9-May 19, 2011 PCTB Rm 207
Leica CW-STED Super-resolution Demo (2nd visit) Just-released detector improvement: Outstanding signal-to-noise detectors {"HyD" hybrid detectors, ~5x better S/N}; More usable dyes.
  • July 8, 2010 - July 21, 2010 Montcastle Aud & PCTB G18/19
Leica CW-STED Demo Try the newest version of STED super-resolution microscopy: new fluorescent protein compatibility and new 2-color colocalization at super-resolution
  • Sept 10, 2009, 10-12 noon outside Microscope Facility (Physiology G04)
Invitrogen Troubleshooting Office Hours Premo FUCCI (fluorescenlty monitor cell-cycle in living cells) and new quantum dot (QDot) compatible products
  • May 20, 2009; 11:30-1:30 outside Microscope Facility (Physiology G04)
Invitrogen Troubleshooting Office Hours Click-It TUNEL (apoptosis indicator) and APEX labeling (small amts of protein)
  • Apr 23, 2009; 1-3PM outside Microscope Facility (Physiology G04)
Invitrogen Troubleshooting Office Hours EdU (better than BrdU), Alexa Fluors, Prolong Gold Antifade
