Bottom Line
The JHM board of trustees has approved an updated budget and schedule for the new clinical buildings. The budget, $535 million in October 2004, now is $725 million. Occupancy, originally projected for fall 2008, now is planned for spring 2009. For the most part, the revised budget reflects the escalating costs of health care construction. Additional medical equipment and 73,000 more square feet of space (for a grand total of 1.5 million) also have contributed to the increase. “The budget was just too tight to properly execute the project,” explained Sally MacConnell, VP of facilities. Because of inherent risks, such as those involving the still-escalating costs of materials, keeping the project on budget and on schedule, she said, “will be a fight every day.”
