Twenty years ago, a unique partnership between Johns Hopkins and the federal government averted the closure of the former Wyman Park Public Health Service Hospital. Today, it is a successful outpatient clinic for military dependents and retirees.

McKusick receives National Medal of Science
The man widely acknowledged as the father of genetic medicine, Dr. Victor A. McKusick, accepted the National Medal of Science at a White House ceremony June 13.

DePaulo New Director of Psychiatry
Dr. J. Raymond DePaulo Jr., a world-renowned expert in mood disorders, has replaced Dr. Paul McHugh as director of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. McHugh led the department for a quarter century.

Discovery could improve design of hearing aids
Hopkins scientists have discovered how tiny cells in the inner ear change sound into an electrical signal that the brain can understand, a finding that could advance the range or accuracy of hearing aids and cochlear implants.

Filtering blood improves rate of successful kidney transplants
By filtering kidney patients' blood of antibodies that normally would reject a donor kidney, Hopkins transplant surgeons have been 93 percent successful in transplanting the organs regardless of blood type.

Experimental treatment for hayfever is safe, effective and fast.
Instead of years of allergy shots that may only marginally reduce their symptoms, hayfever victims may soon be getting substantially more effective control of their problems with just six shots in six weeks.
