  • JOSEPH M. DIETER, JR. art director, graphic designer,
    production supervisor, lecturer

image Joe joined the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine family in 1970. He later attended the Maryland Institute College of Art, focusing on graphic design, photography, and print production. Over his years at Hopkins, Joe has created countless diagrammatic illustrations, statistical visuals, and cartoons for medical research publications, lecture presentations, and exhibit displays. He has also designed and produced numerous publications, book covers, newsletters, brochures, ads, and patient education materials. His design work has received both national and international recognition, from trade journals such as Communication Arts, Art Direction, Print, Graphic Design USA, and from other juried competitions such as The Innovative Design Excellence Awards, The New York Creativity Show, Graphic Elements of the World, The Washington International Logo and Trademark Design Awards, The Best of Letterhead and Logo Design, The Strathmore Paper Company, American Corporate Identity, The Association of Medical Illustrators, The Printing Industries of Maryland, and The Rx Club which exhibited in the New York Art Directors Club. His design work was also highly visible throughout Baltimore, after having the honor of creating the celebratory logo for the city's bicentennial celebration. Obviously passionate about typography and identity design, Joe has created numerous logos and program identifiers for clients both inside and outside the Hopkins community, including the one for the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine. Joe has also designed a line of products featuring the artwork of Max Brödel, founder of the Department.
