Coursework Prerequisites

Baccalaureate Degree (ie. B.A., B.S., B.F.A.)
Transcripts demonstrating high academic achievement. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is optional.

*No student will be allowed to matriculate into a graduate program until proof of graduation from an accredited undergraduate program has been received.

Science
One semester in each of the following courses:
General Chemistry for science majors
Vertebrate Anatomy* with mammalian (cat) dissection lab
Vertebrate Physiology* including organ systems
At least one of the following:
Cell Biology, Developmental Biology (Embryology), Histology, Molecular Biology, or Immunology.

*A two semester course in Human Anatomy and Physiology may be substituted for both courses

Art
A portfolio demonstrating artistic ability in the following:
Drawing: Realistic drawings created from direct observation expressing form in space, light on form, and a variety of surface textures. Examples should demonstrate skilled draftsmanship, ability to render detail, and should include still-life arrangements and animal and plant studies.
Figure Drawing: Advanced studies of the human figure drawn directly from the model. Examples should include both long and short poses and may be rendered in a variety of media.
Graphic Design: Layouts that integrate image and typography for a pre-selected format and audience. Client-oriented visual communication projects.
Color Media: An accomplished use of transparent watercolor, opaque paint media, and colored pencil should be included. Landscape and still-life subject matter rendered in a representational manner should demonstrate accurately matched colors creating form and depth.

A class of four to six students is selected each year to matriculate in early August.

Potential candidates may submit a portfolio and applicant profile (ftp applicant profile--.pdf format file=20K, or download Adobe Acrobat Reader to view .pdf file.) anytime during the year, but no later than January 15th of the admission year. Credentials are reviewed in the order of their receipt.

Candidates who qualify for final consideration will be notified by the Admissions Committee, invited to interview and provided access to the online application site. Detailed information about the application is included in the online application instructions. The following supporting documents and the application should be received prior to interviewing with the Committee:

1. Three letters of recommendation. At least one from a science instructor and one from an art instructor.
2. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
3. Application fee.

Final candidates are invited for a personal interview to review a portfolio of original artwork. Some may be asked to submit additional artwork.

All candidates receive written notification of their status by April 15th.

A portfolio may be submitted throughout the year in either 35mm slide or CD-ROM digital format along with an Applicant Profile. The Admissions Committee evaluates them equally, with no preference given to either slide or digital format. Portfolios are retained during the review process. If you want your portfolio returned, please enclose postage or check (payable to Johns Hopkins University).

o 15 to 20 samples of artwork
o Examples of all 4 required art categories: general drawing, figure drawing, graphic design, and
  color media. (See Admission Requirements online or in color brochure)
o A minimum of 5 figure studies.
o A minimum of 2 digital media pieces (graphic design or illustration).
o Additional examples may include: sculpture, prints, digital animations, multimedia presentations or 3D illustrations.
o Medical subject matter should not be included.
o Only properly identified artwork will be reviewed.
Use the Portfolio Identification Form on back of the Applicant Profile which includes:

Title or assignment.

Original size
Date of completion
Source (direct observation or photograph)

Digital Portfolio
Please submit images as both a PowerPoint presentation and as individual JPEG (.jpg) files on a CD formatted for Mac or PC. The image size for the individual JPEG files should be 7.5 inches high by 10 inches wide at 300 ppi (pixels per inch). Identify each JPEG file by number and last name or initials (01Smith.jpg). Note: the Admissions Committee is interested in viewing artistic details and subtleties of your artwork. Therefore, you may wish to include additional detail JPEG files of selected images to enhance your portfolio (01Smith+d.jpg).

Slide Portfolio
Please submit the 35mm slides in an 8.5 by 11 slide sheet and identify each slide by number and last name. (Keeping the slide image upright, place a red dot in the lower left corner of the mount).

Financial Assistance

Substantial Department scholarship funds provide tuition support to all students. Additional financial aid, awarded on the base of need, consists of Department and University loan funds as well as loans from outside lenders (under Federal loan programs). Students are encouraged to apply for graduate student loan support. The Financial Aid Office of the Medical School certifies the eligibility of students for the Federal loan programs.
