    Offered: 3rd Quarter, 1st Year
    Instructors: Juan Garcia, Assistant Professor
    Credits: 2 Credits


    Materials and processes of creating facial prosthetic appliances.


    COURSE objectives


    Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the scope of facial prosthetic appliances, patient types, and various considerations for prosthetic reconstruction
  • Understand the range and physical properties of materials used in facial prosthetic work
  • Understand the various steps involved in creating a facial prosthesis: including impression, sculpting, mold-making, intrinsic color mixing, casting, and extrinsic coloration
  • Understand the various methods used for prosthesis retention
  • Confidently work with a patient creating full and partial face castings using hydrocolloid and silicone-based materials
  • Use scientific terminology for surface nasal and auricular anatomy
  • Accurately replicate nasal and auricular anatomy
  • Understand various custom mold-making designs including flexible and rigid molds
  • Understand various custom cast-making options including silicone, acrylic, and stone

    COURSE assignments


    Students will further develop their skills through class lectures/demonstrations, and class exercises, including:

  • Full-face mold/cast
  • Hand/instrument cast
  • Auricular impression, prosthesis construction


    COURSE evaluation

  • 1:1 faculty-student interface
  • Successful completion of above-mentioned assignments
  • Final grade
