We’ve heard it all before. Students come to Hopkins with a variety of pre-conceived notions about Baltimore, but many come to love their underdog “Charm City” when they discover it can be safe, fun, and liveable despite its reputation.

With its wealth of history, culture, and dining, Baltimore is a wonderful city for visitors and residents alike. Located in the heart of the Eastern Shore and near the Chesapeake Bay, the city has plenty of options for both nature lovers and urbanites. And if over the course of your six to eight years you should exhaust your options in Baltimore, you can travel to Washington DC in less than an hour, Philadelphia in two hours, and New York in three.

Safety:
The School of Medicine is deeply committed to the safety and the security of students, faculty and employees. We are proud of our location, of our partnership with the community, and our mission to serve the people of Baltimore. In 1994, a University-wide Corporate Security Services (CSS) was created to provide friendly but effective controlled access to the campus. In the last three years, there have been no violent crimes against persons on our campus, an admirable record in any setting, urban or rural. The statistics below are not meant to cast doubt on the safety of other campuses (each school will be able to provide a much more thorough picture of its own campuses’ safety outlook), but only to show that our security teams have done an excellent job ensuring student safety on campus. They are provided by the Office of Postsecondary Education in the United States Department of Labor (http://www.ope.ed.gov/security/main.asp).

Students then ask about safety in the surrounding community and the city at large. Baltimore is a big city, and as in many big cities students must be cautious. However, Hopkins provides an extensive shuttle network to assist students and ensure safety. Furthermore, Baltimore is one of the cheapest cities on the east coast, allowing students to easily find affordable housing in safe neighborhoods.

Cost of Living
An advantage of Baltimore is that the comparatively low cost of living allows students to find affordable housing in safe neighborhoods. The table below provides stipend comparisons for Hopkins and several institutions, as provided by CNN’s Money Net and Sperling's Best Places. The amount under “equivalent in Baltimore” is an estimation of what stipend in Baltimore is comparable to a stipend in another city. As you can see, our stipend goes a long way toward ensuring you can find a comfortable, safe living situation during your time here.
