Completed secondary applications, letters of recommendation, and application fee must be received at Johns Hopkins no later than NOVEMBER 16, 2009. The secondary application fee for The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is $80. This fee is non-refundable and must be returned with the secondary application. The application fee will be waived for applicants who have received an AMCAS fee waiver.
The secondary application includes special instructions for applying to the MD-PhD Program. Additional letters of recommendation are required for all MD-PhD applicants. MD-PhD applicants should send all letters of recommendations via the AMCAS letter service. Any additional supplemental material pertaining to their MD-PhD application (optional) not already in the primary or secondary applications may be sent via mail to the:
MD-PhD Program, 1830 E. Monument Street, Suite 2-300, Baltimore, MD 21205.
The course prerequisites listed in the application apply to both MD and MD-PhD applicants. Please refer to the application for admission requirements and for detailed instructions. Admission requirements may be viewed here.
The Admissions Process
All combined-degree applications are reviewed by a separate MD-PhD Review Committee. A separate Graduate School application is not necessary. The MD-PhD Committee determines whether or not an interview is indicated. This assessment is based on the applicant's research experience, letters of recommendation, academic performance, and evidence for a commitment to medicine. The Committee considers standardized test scores only in the context of the applicant's other credentials. If an interview is granted, the applicant is notified by the MD-PhD Office and the interview date, schedule and overnight accommodations are arranged.
Occasionally and in certain circumstances, an outstanding applicant who is not accepted into the MD-PhD Program may, upon recommendation of the MD-PhD Review Committee and consent of the student, be considered by the regular MD Admissions Committee. In these instances, the application is forwarded to the Medical School Admissions Office, and the applicant is notified.
Interview visits generally last for two days. Applicants are interviewed by members of the MD-PhD Committee and other faculty members who share their research interests. Applicants have many opportunities to meet with current students and tour the campus during their visit. To see a map of the campus, click here. For directions to the campus, click here.
Applicants who are offered admission are encouraged to revisit Johns Hopkins in April, at the expense of the Program. During this revisit, applicants have a chance to meet informally with faculty members of their choice, to spend more time with other students, and to explore the attractions of the Baltimore-Washington area.
All inquiries regarding status of an application and/or other questions should be directed to: Sharon Welling (Director of Finance and Administration) swellin1@jhmi.edu, 410-955-8008.
Minority Applicants
The recruitment of students from underrepresented minority groups is a top priority of the MD-PhD Program. Of the 98 current MD-PhD trainees, 27 (28%) are from minority groups. Minority applicants who have been accepted into the MD or MD-PhD Programs are invited to attend a Welcome Back Weekend at Hopkins, held in April, where they attend student panels and classes, spend time with current students, and participate in informal meetings with Dr. Peter Maloney, Associate Dean, Graduate Student Affairs, Dr. Robert Siliciano, Director of the MD-PhD Program, and a host of faculty, students and administrators who have taken an interest in the recruitment and training of underrepresented minority students. During the weekend, visiting students have a chance to meet with all current minority MD-PhD students. The weekend concludes with a brunch at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Carson.
The excellence and dedication of Hopkins minority students goes beyond their prowess and skill in the lab. In fact, many Hopkins MD-PhD students are instrumental in advocating for underrepresented minority students at Johns Hopkins. Many minority students at Hopkins are involved in community service projects, and several MD-PhD students hold national positions in the SNMA. Other Hopkins minority students are equally active in the SNMA and are committed to making Johns Hopkins a positive and productive environment for underrepresented minority students.
