The timeline below is a schematic of the most common curriculum chosen by students. However, MD-PhD students have considerable flexibility in structuring their course of study. Most choose the 2-4-1 integration of medical and graduate studies where "4" represents the uninterrupted four-year block of graduate studies. However, occasional students opt for other arrangements such as 1-4-2, or 2.5-4-0.5. The 1-4-2 option has been chosen by students who made substantial research progress during the summer research rotation following the first year of medical school and decided to begin graduate studies immediately. Students who want more first-hand experience in clinical medicine before beginning graduate work can elect the 2.5-4-0.5 option in which they complete most or all of the required clinical clerkships before beginning graduate study. This can give them a better appreciation of the clinical relevance of their research. In making a choice, trainees consult extensively with the Program Director, the Dean of Students, members of the MD-PhD Committee, prospective research mentors, and their faculty advisors. Please consult the links at left (under "Academics") for more details.
