| In the United States,
many of the individual states license those who practice TCM. There are
also national certification tests, for those who practice in a state without
licensing procedures. Certain states such as California are more strict
with licensing. Certification exams are costly and once certified, must
take a recertification exam every four years.
The National Accreditation Commission for Schools
and Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NACSCAOM) accredits
schools which offer masters or diplomate programs in TCM (acupuncture,
herbal medicine, or both). NACSCAOM's findings are recognized by the U.S.
Secretary of Education as well as by the Commission on Recognition of
Postsecondary Accreditation (CORPA). (Students at NACSCAOM-accredited
schools can apply for federal student loans, for example.)
In Canada, there is also a licensing system
similar to the U.S. You could be licensed as follows :
- Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Dr.TCM)
- Registered TCM practitioner (R.TCM.P.)
- Registered TCM herbalist (R.TCM.H.)
- Registered Acupuncturist (R.Ac.).
