Mission Statement

The Office of Referring Physician Services, also known as the CPD (Central Physician's Directory) Office, provides service that facilitates access to and communications with Johns Hopkins Medicine for a patient's referring and primary care physician(s). It is an institutional point of contact for referring physicians.

Office Functions

I.   Improve communications with referring physicians.

     1.   Maintain Central Physician Directory Database (CPD).

•  The CPD is the hospital repository for community physician information.
•  New physician names are added to keep the database current either through daily operations or as a group      throughout the year.    

      2.  Ensure documents reach the referring physicians:

• The CPD database interfaces with Inpatient (SMS), Outpatient (EPIC), and EPR systems.  This allows schedulers to choose the correct physician for the patient's visit.
• Via Document Distribution Services (DDS), an autofax system, the office oversees autofaxing of inpatient discharge worksheets, discharge summary, and outpatient clinic notes to the patient's community physicians.
• Offers Referring Physician WEB access to physicians.
• The office is responsible for correcting failed fax numbers.

     3.   Increase referring physicans per patient visit:

• Office produces Inpatient and Outpatient Compliance Reports that report on referring physician information collected for visits.
• Office produces Referring Physician Reports (semi-annually) that identify community referring physicians referring patterns to specific departments.

II.  Marketing and Outreach to community physicians.

    1.  Provide database analysis to JHM entities (including CME, Strategic Planning,

         Marketing and Communications, and JHM Departments/Divisions).

    2.  Provide mailing lists to the same groups upon request for one time mailings or a repeating publication,

          i.e., Physician Update

    3.  "New Doc" packet sent quarterly to newly identified referring physicians.
