Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a major threat to women. While mammography and genetic discoveries have greatly improved early detection, many women continue to suffer recurrences of disease. Investigators have been working to decipher the molecular pathways and gene interactions that trigger the growth and progression of breast cancer cells. Research has been focused on genetic changes which are being use to improve early detection in young women, identify breast cancers that are likely to recur, and as targets for treatment.  New approaches that boost the immune system also are being employed for breast cancer prevention and also to hold existing breast cancers in check.  Program Leaders are Vered Stearns, M.D., and Sara Sukumar, Ph.D.
