Lung and Esophageal Cancer Program

Lung and Esophageal Cancer Experts

The Lung and Esophageal Cancer Program is part of a multidisciplinary team approach to patients with lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and mesothelioma, bringing together pathology, pulmonology, radiology, surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology specialists for the patient’s treatment plan.

As a part of the larger Upper Aerodigestive Cancer Program, these specialists focus their attention on cancers most directly linked to tobacco use, including lung, head and neck, and esophageal cancers. Smoking continues to be a leading cause of cancer and investigators in this program have identified a series of molecular events that contribute to cancer development.  These events include both genetic mutations and other molecular alterations affecting gene expression.  Taken together, these molecular markers are being used to detect precancerous changes, diagnose cancers, and guide surgeons in removing tumors.

Johns Hopkins Interventional Pulmonologists also offer minimally invasive procedures such as endobronchial ultrasound and electromagnetic / virtual bronchoscopic navigation to diagnose and stage cancer.  Additionally, these pulmonogists focus on procedures to improve breathing due to central airway obstruction and malignant pleural effusions.

In oral cancers, these markers may help surgeons precisely pinpoint cancer cells and spare healthy tissue—which could mean preserving a patient’s speech, sight, or appearance. A number of biologic therapies directed against molecular alterations specific to the cancer are being evaluated and show promise for patients with cancers of the lung, head and neck, and esophagus.
