You are eligible to participate in this research study, if you are an English-speaking woman between the ages of 16 and 35, who:
- Has a primary care provider and/or gynecologist;
- Is not pregnant;
- Has your uterus and does not have any devices implanted there (i.e. Mirena or Paraguard);
- Does not have any conditions that alter your immune system or hormone levels; and
- Is not taking any medications that suppress your immune system or regulate your hormone levels.
You may enroll at the Johns Hopkins Bayview, White Marsh or Green Spring Station OB/GYN Clinics (providing you are seeing a gynecologist at one of these sites) or the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) at Johns Hopkins Bayview. The enrollment visit will take about an hour.
In addition to the enrollment visit, we will ask you to see us for follow-up visits at the CRU seven more times over the course of two years. These visits will take about 30 minutes. Parking passes or bus tokens will be provided as needed.
At each visit, you will be asked to complete questionnaires involving general, oral and reproductive health information. You also will be asked to provide vaginal and cervical swabs and brushes, as well as blood, urine and saliva samples.
During the two weeks before each of your visits, you will be asked to complete a diary every day and collect vaginal swabs six times.
During your participation, you will receive $50 for each visit you complete. In addition, if you complete 80 percent or more of your visits and visit intervals, you will receive $100 as a bonus at your final visit.
