Digital mammography suite

Mammography is an important diagnostic radiology procedure used to detect abnormalities in the breast. The procedure is widely used to detect breast cancer which can be effectively treated in the early stages.

Annual screening mammograms for all women over age 40 are recommended by the American College of Radiology. Any changes in the breasts such as a rash, nipple discharge or a lump (which can be felt) should be reported to a physician. In those cases, a diagnostic mammogram may be required.

Mammograms are performed by licensed board certified technologists. In addition, the mammography division is accredited by the American College of Radiology and the FDA. Staff members are specially trained to perform and interpret breast x-rays of the highest quality with the least amount of radiation exposure.

Mammography services at the Johns Hopkins Bayview campus are performed at the Johns Hopkins Breast Center (located at 301 Mason Lord Drive, Suite 1300). The Breast Center provides patients with leading technology, including digital mammography. With digital mammography, radiologists can view images more clearly and abnormalities are easier to see. Digital mammography is further enhanced by computer-aided detection (CAD) software, which highlights areas of concern. The Breast Center team provides a personalized approach to ensure your comfort and privacy, with the latest treatments and innovative clinical services.

American College of Radiology Gold Seal of Accreditation for MammographyJohns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center has been granted the American College of Radiology (ACR) gold seal. The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.
