Activities/Tips

  • If you are not already, use behavioral event interviewing techniques and questions.
  • Probe for specifics when asking your questions.
  • Provide realistic job previews.  If possible, use videotapes, a job share day, and conversations with employees to set realistic expectations.
  • Study the competencies needed for the job you are hiring for.
  • Talk with recent hires to learn about their experiences in the hiring process.  Identify problems in the process and discuss those with Human Resources.
  • Communicate the organization’s (and your) vision and explain how the new employee fits into that vision.
  • Use interview guides to plan and conduct interviews.
  • Establish or take advantage of an employee referral program.
  • Study your best employees to understand what characteristics make up a successful employee in your organization.
  • If you are having difficulty hiring the right people, use multiple interviewers and/or multiple sessions if possible.
  • Let the candidate do most of the talking.
  • Conduct longer interviews to get to know the candidate better.
  • Utilize an “onboarding” process and checklist.
  • Check out the suggestions under the “Provides Team and Individual Developmental Feedback” section
