J-1 Scholar Employment Options

Individuals in the United States as Research Scholars or Short-Term Scholars under the auspices of the Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs within the U.S. Department of State (DOS) and a Designated Program Sponsor (e.g., The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions) are eligible to receive payment from the organization listed on Form DS-2019 as the source of funds (see Section 5 of the Form DS-2019) and/or the Designated Program Sponsor (see Section 2 of the Form DS-2019) for a period of validity stated on the form.

Under limited circumstances, individuals may receive compensation from other sources/institutions provided prior written authorization from the Responsible Officer (RO) or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) has been secured.
