Leave of Absense Policy for F-1 and J-1 Students

When processing a leave of absence request for an international student, the relevant school, department, and/or division should notify the Office of International Services in order to determine the appropriate course of action. In general, students in F-1 or J-1 visa status may NOT remain in the United States while on a personal leave of absence.

One of the few exceptions to this is if a student requires a leave of absence due to medical reasons (NOTE: This would also require authorization from our office concerning dropping below full-time. Click HERE for more information on acceptable reasons for dropping below full-time). Students requiring a leave of absence due to medical reasons are eligible to stay in the United States, subject to conditions set forth by the U.S. Immigration & Naturalization Service (INS) and in accordance with information provided directly to the Office of International Services by a licensed physician. Department faculty and staff should be aware that an international student on full or partial medical leave, whether based on physical or psychological grounds, MUST notify and receive authorization in advance from the Office of International Services in order to remain legally in the United States while on the leave of absence.

Questions concerning other exceptions to this policy must be addressed to the Office of International Services.
